International technology group ANDRITZ, in partnership with Slovak engineering firm VUJE, has been awarded a contract by VODOHOSPODARSKA VYSTAVBA to comprehensively modernize the Gabcikovo hydroelectric power plant on the Danube. This facility is the largest hydroelectric plant in Slovakia and a cornerstone of the nation's energy infrastructure, supplying approximately 10% of Slovakia's electricity. The modernization is vital for ensuring the plant's long-term reliability and sustainability, thereby supporting Slovakia's energy independence and transition to renewable sources.
The project entails the complete renewal and upgrade of the plant's electromechanical equipment, which currently has a total capacity of 720 MW. The order value is in the mid three-digit million-euro range and has been included in ANDRITZ's order intake for the third quarter of 2026. The scope of work includes the gradual refurbishment of eight Kaplan turbine-generator units to the latest technical standards. Key objectives are to improve efficiency and availability, and to extend the technical service life of critical equipment by at least 30 years.
ANDRITZ will supply model testing, engineering, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning services. The modernization will cover turbine and generator components, automation systems, excitation, protection, and control systems, as well as the renewal of transformers and auxiliary electrical systems. The work will be executed sequentially to maintain the plant's availability during the upgrade, minimizing any disruption to electricity generation.
