Avolta's Hudson Wins 20-Year Duty-Free Contract at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Elevating Traveler Experience with Local Immersion

Avolta AG, through its Hudson brand, has been awarded a 20-year duty-free contract at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), marking a significant expansion of its presence at the airport. The agreement, secured in partnership with local small businesses, covers more than 2,800 square meters of new travel retail space across A, N, and S Concourses. This long-term commitment underscores the growing importance of experiential retail in airports and highlights how major operators are increasingly integrating local culture and community engagement into their offerings to differentiate themselves in a competitive market.

The new duty-free stores will draw inspiration from Seattle and Washington State, featuring locally sourced foods and gifts, Washington State spirits, dedicated tasting experiences, and an exclusive ‘Exploring Seattle’ retail range designed specifically for SEA. Live performances by Seattle artists, local product tastings, and installations inspired by the city’s iconic glass artist will immerse travelers in the region’s sights, sounds, and flavors before they depart. This approach reflects Avolta’s strategy of tailoring retail experiences to each location, aiming to transform the airport journey into an extension of the destination itself.

Steve Johnson, President & CEO, North America, Avolta, said, “This new duty-free offer, coupled with Hudson’s emphasis on immersive experiences and digital engagement, will transform the travel experience at SEA. We are proud and excited to grow our long-time partnership with the Port of Seattle to help usher in the next phase of SEA’s evolution and make the journey as exciting as the destination for the millions of travelers from around the world who visit the airport every year.”

The contract also builds in meaningful opportunities for women, minority, and small-owned businesses to continue thriving at SEA, reinforcing the Port of Seattle’s commitment to supporting local entrepreneurs. Port of Seattle Commissioner Sam Cho noted, “Duty-free shops are a hallmark of major international airports, and this expansion enables SEA to meet growing demand through innovative use of space and technology that elevates the overall traveler experience.” This aspect of the deal highlights a broader trend where airport concessions are used as vehicles for economic inclusion and community development.

For Avolta, this win strengthens its footprint at SEA, where it already operates across both travel retail and food & beverage. The 20-year term provides long-term revenue stability and allows for substantial investment in immersive retail concepts. As airports worldwide seek to enhance passenger experience and drive non-aeronautical revenue, Avolta’s success at SEA could serve as a model for future concession agreements. The integration of digital engagement and local artistry aims to create a memorable sense of place, potentially increasing dwell time and spending per passenger.
