As the back-to-school season approaches, families are reminded to prioritize health coverage for their children. Free or low-cost health coverage is available through the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) or Medicaid in every state for eligible individuals. With health coverage, children and teens can receive necessary care to stay healthy and succeed in school.
Many families may qualify for coverage without realizing it. Eligibility varies by state and is based on family income and household size. In most states, children up to age 19 from a family of four earning up to $80,000 per year may be eligible. In some states, eligible children can still qualify if family income is even higher.
Having health coverage helps families send their children to school ready to learn. Depending on the program and a child's individual needs, Medicaid and CHIP can provide eligible kids with a range of services, including annual checkups and school physicals, preventive care, dental care, vision and hearing services, mental health care, prescription medications, and specialized services for children with disabilities.
Applications for Medicaid and CHIP can be submitted by phone, mail, or in person through your state's Medicaid or CHIP office. Families can also find their state's information online at InsureKidsNow.gov/coverage. Enrollment is open year-round, so families do not have to wait for a specific time to get covered. Once enrolled, coverage must be renewed every twelve months, so it is important to keep contact information up to date with the state office.
