BRAIN Biotech, a specialist enzyme and biological solutions provider, announced that the European Patent Office has granted a substance patent (EP4301852 B1) for its CRISPR-BMC nuclease technology. The patent, effective from March 18, 2026, in European Unitary Patent countries, Great Britain, and Switzerland, covers a novel family of CRISPR nucleases developed by the company. This milestone enhances BRAIN Biotech's freedom to use the technology internally and in customer projects, while also enabling expanded licensing activities.
The CRISPR-BMC nucleases exhibit high activity across prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms, including bacteria, yeasts, fungi, plants, and mammalian cells. By generating efficient double-strand breaks at defined genomic locations, the system allows precise editing to modify organism properties. BRAIN Biotech applies this technology to optimize microbial production strains such as E. coli, Bacillus, Pichia, and Aspergillus for producing enzymes, proteins, and small molecules.
CEO Adriaan Moelker emphasized the significance of the patent for cost-effective manufacturing processes. "Our technology helps make manufacturing processes that utilize microorganisms more cost-effective," he said. "The family of CRISPR-BMC nucleases represents yet another innovative genome-editing tool from our BRAINBioIncubator, complementing the already patented CRISPR-BEC nucleases." Alexander Pelzer, Head of R&D, added that CRISPR-BMC accelerates strain development for both internal and customer projects, leveraging decades of molecular biology expertise.
The patent is pending in other key markets, including the USA and Japan. BRAIN Biotech has already licensed the technology to companies in various fields and plans to expand licensing. This development positions the company to offer its CRISPR-BMC technology for commercial use, further driving innovation in industrial biotechnology.
