CICC Global Institute Brings China Economic Dialogue to Southeast Asia Amid Global Rebalancing

On October 13, the CICC Global Institute (CGI) convened its 2026 Q4 Macro Forum in Bangkok, Thailand, marking the first time the institute's quarterly forum was held in Southeast Asia. The event, themed "China's Economy amid Global Rebalancing: New Paradigms and New Industries," brought together experts from the International Monetary Fund, ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office, Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance, National University of Singapore, ICBC Standard Bank, Wood Mackenzie, and NSQ Capital. Its timing during the week of the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings underscored the growing importance of Chinese perspectives in global economic discussions.

Yanliang Miao, Chief Economist and Senior Managing Director of CICC, emphasized that understanding China requires a global rebalancing perspective. He pointed to the dual forces of emerging industry dynamism and the transition from old to new growth engines, which carry significant implications for jobs, incomes, and demand. Miao noted that alongside green and digital transitions, China is working toward a growth model supported by higher household incomes and services-led consumption. On the international monetary order, he observed that shifts in the global economy, trade networks, and financial technology are driving evolution toward a more diversified system. Critically, he argued that economic and trade strength do not automatically translate into international currency status; institutional credibility and the depth and breadth of financial markets remain central to the internationalization of the renminbi.

Huimin Wu, Executive Dean of CGI and Deputy Head of Research Department at CICC, highlighted that China's economy is entering a new stage of development, as discussed in the book The New Pattern of Dual Circulation, jointly published this year by CGI and CICC Research Department. Wu explained that China's trade and outward investment are undergoing a paradigm shift, while emerging industries are becoming increasingly important drivers of growth in the global economy. These changes are both part of and deeply shaped by broader global economic rebalancing, giving rise to a new pattern of interaction between China and the global economy.

The forum featured welcome remarks, keynote speeches, two thematic dialogues, and an evening discussion session. Discussions focused on the transformations of China's trade and outward investment and their global implications, as well as prospects for emerging industries such as innovative pharmaceuticals, green energy, and artificial intelligence. By bringing these topics to Southeast Asia, CGI aimed to present Chinese perspectives to a global audience and foster deeper understanding of China's economic transformation process. The event was an innovative exploration of CGI's ongoing efforts to strengthen international exchanges.

Looking ahead, CGI plans to continue deepening its international engagement and work toward building an international dialogue platform focused on China's economy. As announced via Media OutReach Newswire, the forum contributed to greater mutual trust and consensus, playing a positive role in global economic discussions. The decision to hold the forum in Bangkok reflects a strategic recognition that as China's economic ties with Southeast Asia deepen, so does the need for sustained, high-level dialogue. The forum's outcomes could influence how international investors and policymakers interpret China's rebalancing, particularly regarding the renminbi's global role and the rise of new industries.
