Comfort First Analysis: Two-Thirds of Sanford's Heating Demand Falls After Christmas

An analysis by Comfort First Heating & Cooling of the 1991-2020 U.S. Climate Normals shows that about two-thirds of Sanford's normal outdoor-temperature heating demand falls after Christmas, a finding that shifts the perspective on when heating needs are greatest and underscores the value of planning for the full season.

Using daily heating-degree-day normals from the Sanford 8 NE weather station, the company calculated that 64.4% of the station's normal July-June heating demand occurs between December 26 and June 30, compared with 19.6% before December. That means the post-Christmas period has 3.28 times as much normal heating demand as the pre-December window. The pattern holds across North Carolina: all 48 stations in the qualified panel have a larger after-Christmas share, with a median of 64.9%. Raleigh-Durham International Airport shows a similar split, at 65.5% after Christmas versus 18.6% before December.

For homeowners, the implication is that the heating season is back-loaded. "Sanford's figures put the seasonal calendar in perspective," said Adam Hagen, general manager at Comfort First Heating & Cooling. "About two-thirds of the normal outdoor-temperature heating demand falls after Christmas. Homeowners can keep that longer view in mind when planning around the holidays, while remembering that the weather in an individual winter can differ from the historical pattern." The study's authors caution that the normals describe outdoor-temperature heating demand, not a forecast or a measure of household outcomes such as spending or energy use.

The analysis is based on a fixed July 1-June 30 cycle and uses heating degree days with a 65°F base. It includes a qualified panel of 48 stations with complete native data, avoiding analyst filling or station substitution. Sanford's after-Christmas share of 64.4% ranks 36th among the 48 stations, while Cape Hatteras AP has the highest share at 73.4% and Mt Mitchell the lowest at 62.1%. Even the lowest share places the majority of normal heating demand after Christmas.

Comfort First Heating & Cooling, founded in 2010, provides HVAC services in Sanford and the Triangle. The company's analysis offers a local reference for understanding the normal seasonal calendar as North Carolina enters the heating season.
