However, experts are now warning that the rapid development of quantum computing could soon threaten the security foundations of the internet itself.

As companies like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) race to commercialize their quantum computing software and hardware, they are inadvertently creating an urgency for new cryptographic standards. Quantum computers, which leverage the principles of quantum mechanics, have the potential to solve certain mathematical problems exponentially faster than classical computers. This includes factoring large prime numbers, which is the basis for widely used encryption algorithms such as RSA and ECC.

The implications are profound. If a sufficiently powerful quantum computer were built, it could break the encryption that secures virtually all digital communications and stored data. The cost of inaction could be catastrophic, as the cybersecurity landscape is poised for a fundamental transformation. The race is on to develop and deploy quantum-safe solutions before the quantum threat becomes a reality.
