Leadership expert, executive coach, and bestselling author Dr. Sam Adeyemi is challenging conventional thinking about leadership with his Four "Nots" of Leadership, four principles that challenge some of the most common assumptions about what it means to lead. Adeyemi, the author of SHIFTS: 6 Steps to Transform Your Mindset and Elevate Your Leadership (Wiley) with a combined 3.8 million social media followers, breaks down four common misconceptions about leadership, from titles and followers to success and self-focused leadership.
1) Leadership Is NOT Defined by a Title: Adeyemi challenges the conventional idea that leadership is tied to a person's position or level of authority. "Leadership is not about occupying a position in the C-Suite, government, or some other high position in society," says Adeyemi. "It is the ability to influence people to achieve a goal. All of us have some influence, and all of us can learn, develop, and strengthen our ability to influence others." This principle matters because it democratizes leadership, suggesting that anyone, regardless of rank, can lead by developing influence.
2) Leadership Is NOT About Creating Followers: Adeyemi says that simply accumulating followers and people under your authority isn't nearly enough. "Raise leaders. Develop people. Create influence that extends far beyond your reach," Adeyemi says. "If those who follow you and serve under you never grow, never lead, and never develop others, then leadership has stopped with you." The implication is that true leadership is measured by the growth and empowerment of others, not by the size of one's following.
3) Success Is NOT the Destination: Adeyemi also challenges the idea that success in and of itself should be viewed as the ultimate goal. "It's time to rethink your definition of success, not as a destination per se, but as a stepping stone for significance, which I define as making a meaningful impact on people and society," says Adeyemi. "Because success matters, but people matter more." This reframing encourages leaders to pursue impact beyond personal achievement, aligning with broader social responsibility.
4) Leadership Is NOT About Yourself: Adeyemi challenges the conventional idea that leadership is primarily about the person in the leadership role. "If you want to become a leader of true influence, stop making leadership about yourself and focus on the value you can provide to others," says Adeyemi. "Keep your message simple, communicate it consistently, and remember that people will follow your words when your actions back them up and your message ultimately connects to their lives and aspirations." This principle underscores that effective leadership is service-oriented, not self-centered.
These Four "Nots" have significant implications for organizations and society. By shifting the focus from titles to influence, from followers to leaders, from success to significance, and from self to others, Adeyemi provides a roadmap for developing authentic, impactful leadership. His insights are particularly relevant in today's complex business environment, where traditional hierarchies are being questioned and the demand for ethical, purpose-driven leadership is growing.
