Valentine was twelve years old when he first arrived at Camp Wabaningo, a Boy Scout camp in the dense forests of Western Michigan. Standing six feet tall and weighing 150 pounds, he carried a mix of excitement and fear about the two weeks ahead. That pivotal summer became the foundation for his novel, which follows Jimmie and his fellow scouts as they navigate camp life—mastering swimming and canoeing, earning marksmanship badges, and participating in the mysterious Order of the Arrow ceremony.

Valentine believes these experiences teach values that last a lifetime. "Every passage to the new environment was a fork in the road of life," he reflects, quoting Yogi Berra's famous saying: "When you come to a fork in the road, take it…" to which Valentine adds his own philosophy: "Take whichever fork you want because it's up to you to be happy."

Valentine's own life reflects the scouting values he champions. Born in Chicago in 1938, he served in the Army after graduating from Knox College in 1961 and spent his career in management roles at Union Special Machine Company before founding Valentine Enterprises in 1993. He sold the company in 2024 after 31 successful years. A dedicated community leader, Valentine has served as president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, president of the Chicago Knox College Club, president of the Knox College Alumni Association, founder and president of the Siwash Athletic Club, and received the Knox College Service Award.
