eyeo, a company specializing in nanophotonic imaging technology, announced today it has raised €40 million in Series A funding, bringing its total funding to €55 million. The round is led by Innovation Industries, with participation from existing investors imec.xpand, Invest-NL Deep Tech Fund, QBIC fund, High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) and Brabant Development Agency (BOM). The funds will support eyeo's efforts to bring seven years of proven nanophotonic science to market as production-ready color-splitting sensors.

Traditional image sensors lose about 70% of incoming light due to color filter arrays that absorb rather than direct photons. eyeo's technology uses nanophotonic structures to split and guide light directly to individual pixels, capturing all incoming light for superior sensitivity and color fidelity. This breakthrough enables sub-0.5-micron pixels for ultra-compact, high-performance imaging across a $30 billion market spanning smartphones, extended reality (XR) devices, smart cities, and more.

“eyeo’s technology represents a fundamental shift in how image sensors capture light,” said a representative from Innovation Industries. “By overcoming the 70% blind spot inherent in conventional sensors, eyeo unlocks new possibilities for imaging in low-light conditions and compact form factors.” The technology is compatible with any CMOS sensor platform, allowing manufacturers to integrate it into existing production lines without major retooling.

eyeo is headquartered at High Tech Campus Eindhoven, with a sensor design center in Antwerp. The company previously raised €15 million in seed and early-stage funding from imec.xpand, Invest-NL Deep Tech Fund, QBIC fund, HTGF, and BOM. The new funding will accelerate product development and initial production runs, targeting first commercial sensors in 2027.

The implications are significant: smartphones could capture clearer low-light photos, XR headsets could offer more immersive visuals, and autonomous vehicles could rely on better sensor data. By eliminating the light loss inherent in traditional Bayer filters, eyeo’s nanophotonic approach may set a new standard for image quality across industries.
