Veteran firearms instructor and author Rick Billington has launched a national educational initiative aimed at redefining the conversation around firearm ownership by emphasizing personal responsibility over political rhetoric. The initiative, announced on June 30, 2026, includes the release of his new book The Responsible Gun Owner and a six-part blog series titled The Responsible Gun Owner Series, set to begin weekly publication on July 12, 2026.
Billington, founder of Michigan Pistol Academy, argues that current national discussions about firearms are too focused on the weapons themselves and neglect the broader responsibilities that accompany ownership. 'Far too much of the conversation around firearms focuses exclusively on the weapon itself,' Billington said. 'Very little attention is given to the responsibility, judgment, and decision-making that ultimately determine whether a firearm owner is truly prepared.'
The book The Responsible Gun Owner delves into the mental, legal, emotional, and decision-making aspects of firearm ownership, covering topics such as preparedness, personal accountability, emotional discipline, conflict avoidance, and legal understanding. The accompanying blog series expands on these themes with volumes addressing mindset, self-defense law, conflict avoidance, home defense planning, decision-making under stress, and emotional control. The series will be hosted on the Michigan Pistol Academy educational platform.
Billington, who has decades of experience in law enforcement and civilian firearms education, emphasizes that responsible gun ownership requires more than technical shooting skills. 'The goal of proper training is not simply becoming proficient with a firearm. It is learning judgment, emotional discipline, conflict avoidance, and understanding when force should never become necessary in the first place,' he explained. The initiative aims to help both new and experienced owners understand the full scope of their responsibilities, including legal preparedness and decision-making under stress.
By focusing on education rather than legislation, Billington hopes to reduce risks associated with firearm ownership and promote a culture of accountability.
