As the United States marks its 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026, a new national initiative called Freedom to Play is launching to confront a child-safety crisis in community play spaces. The initiative, based on documented failures in Piney Orchard, Maryland, highlights that more than 200,000 children aged 6 to 12 are seriously injured on U.S. playgrounds each year, a direct result of inadequate oversight across approximately 370,000 homeowner associations (HOAs).
Freedom to Play was founded after a series of events at a Piney Orchard community playground. The playground opened without meeting Maryland safety standards, without federal ASTM/CPSC compliance documentation, and without certified inspection. In October 2025, county inspectors identified code violations and shut it down, but the HOA reopened it anyway, notifying 4,000 households that it was safe. A child fell from a 25-foot climbing structure, and a resident with Interstitial Lung Disease suffered lung decline after chemical exposure from the rubber mat surface.
The initiative calls for five national reforms: mandatory safety disclosure, environmental and chemical accountability, certified independent inspections, protection for medically vulnerable residents, and a centralized national safety registry. A documentary is in development to examine preventable injuries and regulatory gaps. The campaign asks, "What good is freedom if our children are not safe enough to enjoy it?"
