Garuda Indonesia is advancing its service transformation with the introduction of a piece-based checked baggage policy, known as the Piece Concept, for tickets issued from September 1, 2026. The new policy replaces the previous weight-based system, offering passengers greater clarity and increased allowances of up to 64 kilograms, depending on route and class.
Under the new policy, passengers on domestic Economy Class will receive one piece up to 23 kilograms, while Business and First Class passengers will get two pieces up to 32 kilograms each. For international routes, Economy Class passengers will receive two pieces up to 23 kilograms each, and Business and First Class passengers two pieces up to 32 kilograms each. This represents a significant increase from the previous weight-based allowances: domestic Economy rises from 20 kg to 23 kg, Business from 30 kg to 64 kg, and First from 40 kg to 64 kg. On international flights, Economy increases from 30 kg to 46 kg, Business from 40 kg to 64 kg, and First from 50 kg to 64 kg.
Garuda Indonesia Director of Transformation Neil Raymond Mills stated that the Piece Concept is part of the airline's broader modernization efforts to provide passengers with greater certainty and ease when planning their baggage. He noted that the new policy aligns with global aviation standards, supporting more efficient baggage handling and consistency across domestic and international networks. Mills also highlighted that passengers whose tickets are issued before September 1, 2026, will retain their original baggage allowances, even for travel after that date.
To ensure a smooth transition, Garuda Indonesia encourages passengers to review the Piece Concept provisions on its official website at https://www.garuda-indonesia.com/id/en/new-baggage-policy. Further details are available through the Garuda Indonesia Contact Centre and official social media channels.
The implementation of the Piece Concept marks a key step in Garuda Indonesia's commitment to delivering a more transparent and consistent travel experience. Mills emphasized that the airline will continue to review and refine the policy based on passenger feedback, aiming to provide greater value and a seamless journey while upholding safety and regulatory compliance.
