Garuda Indonesia Offers 170,000 Free Domestic Seats to International Travelers to Boost Multi-Destination Tourism

Garuda Indonesia is offering 170,845 domestic roundtrip seats at no additional cost to eligible international passengers flying from 14 origin cities across 10 countries, as part of a strategic initiative to encourage longer stays and multi-destination travel within Indonesia. The program, available for travel from August 1 to November 30, 2026, allows passengers holding roundtrip international tickets to add a domestic roundtrip journey, effectively connecting Indonesia's major gateways with lesser-known regions.

According to Garuda Indonesia Marketing Group Head Prina Eka Putri, the initiative is designed to strengthen Indonesia's travel proposition by leveraging the airline's extensive domestic network. "Indonesia offers far more than a single destination. By making onward domestic travel easier, we want international travellers to stay longer, explore more regions and experience more of what Indonesia has to offer," she said. The program aligns with the #DiscoverMoreIndonesia campaign, which seeks to disperse visitor flows and tourism spending beyond Jakarta and Denpasar.

The economic implications are significant. Agny Gallus Pratama, Southeast Asia Branch Manager and Head of the Free Domestic Flight Project Management Office, emphasized that the allocation of over 170,000 seats is intended to amplify the economic value generated by each international arrival. "When visitors travel further and stay longer, the economic impact can extend to hotels, restaurants, local transportation, tourism operators and MSMEs across the regions," he noted. By connecting international traffic directly with domestic routes, the airline expects to enhance the competitiveness of Indonesian destinations in the regional tourism market.

The program also serves the Indonesian diaspora, migrant workers, and citizens returning from overseas, enabling them to reach their home regions more conveniently. This dual focus on international tourists and the diaspora could strengthen cultural ties and stimulate local economies in areas that typically receive fewer visitors.

Garuda Indonesia's move reflects a broader trend among national carriers to use connectivity as a competitive differentiator. By bundling domestic flights with international tickets, the airline not only adds value for passengers but also encourages a more even distribution of tourism revenue across the archipelago. This approach could serve as a model for other countries seeking to promote regional tourism development.
