As the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring regions grapple with the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record, GeoVax Labs, Inc. (Nasdaq: GOVX) has underscored the potential relevance of its vaccine platform and hemorrhagic fever expertise. The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus (BDBV), has already surpassed 4,300 cases and 2,000 deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), and shows no signs of abating. With no approved vaccine specifically targeting Bundibugyo virus, the global health community faces a critical gap in its response arsenal.

GeoVax's lead infectious disease priority remains GEO-MVA, an MVA-based vaccine for mpox and smallpox prevention. The company is preparing to launch a pivotal clinical development program using an immunobridging accelerated regulatory pathway, with portions expected to be conducted in African regions facing significant infectious disease challenges, including areas affected by the current Ebola outbreak. These regional engagements have already established relationships with healthcare and research organizations that are simultaneously responding to Ebola, providing a natural conduit for exploring collaborative efforts.

"Our relationships in the region are being developed first and foremost to advance GEO-MVA, but many of the organizations with whom we are engaging are simultaneously confronting this Ebola outbreak," Dodd added. "Given our experience, we believe it is appropriate to ask how we might help. Any such effort would be pursued collaboratively while maintaining our operational and capital focus on GEO-MVA."

Beyond GEO-MVA, GeoVax retains a portfolio of MVA-based hemorrhagic fever vaccine candidates that have shown protective efficacy in animal models. These programs offer strategic optionality, and the company is open to collaborations, licensing arrangements, and public-private partnerships that could further evaluate and develop these assets without diverting resources from its primary focus. This approach aligns with GeoVax's broader strategy to establish an independent and scalable MVA vaccine supply while building a platform capable of addressing emerging infectious disease threats.

The company's efforts to advance scalable MVA manufacturing, including a continuous cell-line process, are designed to address historical limitations in vaccine production.
