Hong Kong Showcases Role as Gateway for Malaysian Firms Eyeing Regional Growth

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) will bring its flagship promotional campaign, Think Business, Think Hong Kong (TBTHK), to Kuala Lumpur on 11 August, aiming to connect Malaysian businesses with Hong Kong's business leaders, investors and professional services experts. The full-day symposium at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur targets Malaysian companies with regional and global ambitions, offering insights into investment opportunities and cross-border partnerships.

As Malaysia pursues its New Industrial Master Plan 2030, focusing on industrial transformation, sustainability and global value chain integration, the event will illustrate how Hong Kong can serve as a superconnector and super value-adder. Leung Kwan Ho, HKTDC’s Regional Director of South East Asia & South Asia, said at a press briefing: “Through HKTDC’s networks and platforms, we aim to attract more Malaysian businesses to leverage Hong Kong’s advantages and connect them with trusted partners, investors, professional services and market insights, all to help them access the vast opportunities around the world, particularly in the Greater Bay Area and the wider China market, with more confidence.”

Hong Kong, home to nearly 10,000 Chinese Mainland and overseas companies with regional operations, offers Malaysian firms access to an established ecosystem of global businesses, investors and financial institutions. The symposium will feature discussions on RMB internationalisation, sustainability and green innovations, Hong Kong's role as an international financial centre, and healthcare innovations. Algernon Yau, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Hong Kong SAR Government, and YB Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport Malaysia, will be guests of honour at the opening ceremony.

In addition to the symposium, approximately 30 Hong Kong service providers and start-ups will showcase their products and solutions in the Business Support Zone and InnoVenture Salon. One-on-one business consultations and on-site business matching will facilitate deals and collaboration between Malaysian and Hong Kong companies. A delegation of around 100 government officials, business leaders and innovators will explore opportunities through discussions, networking events and business matching meetings.

Malaysia and Hong Kong share strong economic ties. In 2025, Malaysia was Hong Kong’s 3rd largest trading partner among ASEAN member states. At the end of 2025, Hong Kong was Malaysia’s 2nd largest investor after Singapore, with cumulative FDI of US$34.8 billion, and the 2nd largest source of FDI with net flows of US$1.6 billion. The TBTHK event aims to deepen this collaboration, providing Malaysian companies with the connections and expertise needed to pursue new opportunities across regional and global markets.
