HPRA Awards Record Six Scholarships, Expands Pipeline for Hispanic Communicators

The Hispanic Public Relations Association (HPRA) has announced its 2026 scholarship recipients, marking the largest cohort in the program's history. Six students will receive financial support and professional development opportunities, bringing the total number of scholars to 20 and the total awarded to $50,000 since the program began in 2022. The expansion, which includes HPRA's first high school senior recipient, reflects a strategic effort to build a diverse talent pipeline for public relations and communications.

The 2026 HPRA scholars are Camila Garcia Chirino (University of Florida), Isabelle Flores (The University of Texas at Austin), Luis David Latozefsky (Stetson University), Melanie Herrera (Florida International University), Nasaiah Algarin (American University), and Xavier Ramirez (University of Southern California). They were selected for academic achievement, leadership, community involvement, and a commitment to communications fields ranging from public relations and strategic communications to public affairs, entertainment, media, civic engagement, and social impact.

HPRA National President Sonia V. Diaz said the program's growth demonstrates what is possible when the industry invests intentionally in the next generation. "With the support of partners like Aflac and H+M Communications, as well as individual donors, we have been able to expand our reach, open more doors, increase mentorship opportunities, and continue building a program that can make a meaningful impact in communities across the country," Diaz said.

The record-setting class matters because it addresses a persistent gap in access to opportunity for Hispanic students pursuing communications careers. Beyond financial aid, recipients gain mentorship, networking, and exposure to industry leaders, helping to strengthen the pipeline of diverse talent entering the profession. The inclusion of a high school senior also signals that HPRA is reaching students earlier in their academic journeys, potentially increasing long-term impact.

Among the recipients, Melanie Herrera has been selected for the Roshana Gossoff Memorial Scholarship, a $1,500 award honoring the life and legacy of a beloved communicator, FIU alumna, and former HPRA Miami officer. The scholarship recognizes an FIU undergraduate with a strong interest in public relations and communications, ensuring that Gossoff's passion and dedication continue to inspire future professionals.

In addition to the financial award, scholars will receive free access to HPRA National webinars and events, a mentorship and shadowing opportunity with a board member, and recognition at HPRA's annual ¡BRAVO! Awards gala on Nov. 19, 2026, at the LA River Center and Gardens in Los Angeles. The gala celebrates excellence in multicultural communications.

This year's program theme, "Legacy in Motion," honors HPRA's history and the leaders who shape each generation of communicators. The scholarship program embodies that legacy by investing in emerging talent and ensuring that progress built over more than four decades continues forward. As HPRA expands its reach, it reinforces the importance of intentional investment in diversity and the future of the communications industry.
