In a recent newsletter, top motivational speaker and bestselling author Rocky Romanella addressed the growing fear that artificial intelligence will replace human workers, arguing that the human advantage remains the ultimate driver of success. Romanella, founder and CEO of 3SIXTY Management Services, contends that while AI can process information and optimize tasks at unprecedented speed, it cannot inspire belief, build trust, or create the emotional connections that move people to act.
Romanella draws on his extensive career at UPS, where he led major integrations and rebranding initiatives, to illustrate his point. He recalls being chosen to manage the integration of Mailboxes Etc. into UPS despite lacking traditional qualifications for the role. The CEO and COO selected him not based on data or algorithms, but because they saw his commitment and potential—a decision he says AI would never have made. "They needed someone who was all in. Someone who acted like an owner," Romanella writes. "They said, 'We have faith in you.'"
To support his argument, Romanella points to the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team's "Miracle on Ice." While AI could have analyzed the Soviet team's strengths and calculated odds, it could not have built the belief and emotional spark that coach Herb Brooks instilled in his players. "That moment wasn't about data. It was about heart. It was about leadership," Romanella states.
