Jacksonville Author's Poem Offers Emotional Support to Jaguars and Athletes Facing Loss

Gail Carter-Cade, a Jacksonville-based author and lifelong Jaguars fan, has turned a moment of disappointment into a powerful message of support for athletes grappling with the emotional aftermath of loss. After attending a recent Jaguars game in Nashville, Tennessee, where the team suffered a defeat, Carter-Cade observed players avoiding eye contact with fans as they exited the tunnel. Instead of feeling discouraged, she channeled her empathy into a poem titled "A Loss," which she hopes will inspire athletes, students, and fans to recognize and validate the emotional toll of competition.

"My family and I are die-hard Jaguars fans," Carter-Cade said. "We continue to roar for them and never give up hope. We even travel to at least one away game every year." Despite the loss, her commitment to the team remains steadfast, emphasizing that character and effort transcend the scoreboard. "The scoreboard doesn't measure Trevor Lawrence's character or work ethic. It doesn't show that he's a fighter," she noted.

Carter-Cade, who specializes in writing about healing and emotional resilience, draws on insights from Psychology Today, which notes that athletes often experience deep emotional fallout after losses, including sadness, shame, anger, and self-doubt. Her poem reframes loss not as failure but as feedback, encouraging a growth mindset. "A pro doesn't avoid losses; they respond to them," she explained.

The poem, which Carter-Cade shared publicly, captures the raw emotions of an athlete after a defeat: "We lost the game / All I saw was a flash / Now I feel like trash / I can't take the rehash / Or the student's backlash." Through these lines, she aims to bridge the gap between fans and players, fostering a deeper understanding of the invisible struggles athletes face. "I wrote this poem to let athletes know how they feel matters — and to let fans understand the emotional toll of the game," she said.

Carter-Cade hopes her message will resonate beyond football, inspiring support for athletes and students dealing with silent disappointment. She has published workbooks, such as Uplifting The Pain By Fostering Growth Mindset Through Poetry Now on Amazon, to help others navigate emotional pain. Her efforts underscore the importance of empathy in sports culture, reminding fans that behind every loss is a human experience worthy of compassion.
