U.S. Term Limits announced today that former Texas State Representative Jarvis Johnson has agreed to serve as Texas State Co-Chair for the organization, which advocates for term limits on members of Congress. Johnson brings more than three decades of public service, community leadership, and legislative experience to the effort to enact congressional term limits and restore accountability in Washington, D.C.
Johnson, who represented Texas House District 139 from 2016 through January 2025, said he is honored to help advance what he calls one of the most popular and urgently needed government reforms. "Americans are frustrated with a Congress that has become increasingly disconnected from the people it serves," Johnson said. "Congressional term limits will help restore accountability, encourage citizen leadership, and bring fresh ideas and new energy to our nation's capital."
Johnson emphasized that the Founding Fathers never intended public office to become a lifetime career. "When elected officials remain in office for decades, Washington becomes more focused on preserving political power than solving the problems facing hardworking Americans," he said. "Term limits will help ensure that elected officials remain focused on serving the people rather than serving themselves."
Johnson has dedicated more than 30 years to building stronger communities throughout Texas. A lifelong Houstonian, entrepreneur, and public servant, he has focused on empowering individuals and expanding opportunities for underserved communities. During his tenure in the Texas House, he championed legislation on public education, mental health, criminal justice reform, youth development, senior services, public safety, and economic opportunity. Through his legislative leadership and budget advocacy, he helped secure more than $2.1 billion in investments for flood control, infrastructure improvements, historically Black colleges and universities, neighborhood revitalization, and other critical community priorities.
Prior to serving in the Legislature, Johnson made history as one of the youngest individuals elected to the Houston City Council, representing District B. He has been recognized for his innovative leadership, community development initiatives, youth mentorship programs, and commitment to creating economic opportunities for Texas families. He is also a successful business owner whose hiring practices reflect his belief in strengthening communities from within.
