JPMorgan Chase Deploys JPM Coin on Ethereum Mainnet for Institutional Payments

JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM) has technically deployed its JPM Coin deposit token on the Ethereum mainnet, allowing eligible institutional clients to transfer funds within seconds, around the clock. The token represents U.S. dollar deposits held at JPMorgan, according to an Oct. 19 report by Ezra Reguerra and Yohan Yun of Cointelegraph. Emma Landriault, global head of Kinexys Labs, said crypto companies could use the token for blockchain payments, while financial institutions could use it to settle trades and post collateral.

The move matters because it brings a major Wall Street bank’s deposit token onto the world’s most widely used public blockchain, potentially accelerating institutional adoption of blockchain-based settlement. Ethereum was selected for its liquidity and existing use among clients, Landriault said, while JPM Coin transactions will remain restricted to approved institutional participants. That restriction underscores the careful approach JPMorgan is taking to balance innovation with regulatory compliance.

The expansion follows the November 2025 launch of JPM Coin on Coinbase’s Base network, an Ethereum layer-2 blockchain. JPMorgan also announced plans in January 2026 to introduce the token on the Canton Network, extending its support for institutional payments and asset settlement across multiple blockchain networks. The multi-chain strategy signals that JPMorgan aims to provide flexibility and interoperability for clients who may operate on different platforms.

For institutional clients, the ability to move funds in seconds rather than through traditional banking rails could reduce counterparty risk and improve capital efficiency. The token’s use for settling trades and posting collateral could streamline back-office operations and free up capital that is currently tied up in slower settlement processes.

The deployment also positions JPMorgan as a leader among banks exploring tokenized deposits. As more financial institutions consider similar moves, JPMorgan’s experience on Ethereum and other networks could serve as a blueprint. However, the restricted access model may limit the token’s reach compared to public stablecoins, and regulatory scrutiny of bank-issued digital tokens remains a factor to watch.
