Whatcom Feline Alliance is experiencing record demand for its affordable spay and neuter assistance, Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), and community support programs as kitten season peaks in Whatcom County. The foster-based nonprofit, founded in 2019 by Chelsea Beaugez, focuses on prevention as the most effective way to reduce feline suffering, working directly with pet owners, caregivers, and community cat caretakers to remove barriers to timely spay and neuter services.
Unlike many rescue organizations, Whatcom Feline Alliance provides personalized support from start to finish, including appointment scheduling, transportation assistance, humane trap and carrier loans, pre-surgery preparation, and aftercare guidance. This approach makes veterinary care more accessible for families facing financial, transportation, or logistical challenges. “If you can send a text, we can help get your cat fixed. Prevention changes everything, and every cat we help today prevents generations of suffering tomorrow,” said Beaugez.
The impact extends beyond individual cats. Preventing unplanned litters helps reduce overcrowding in shelters and rescues, lowers euthanasia rates, improves neighborhood relationships, and creates healthier outcomes for cats and communities. One of the organization's longtime veterinary partners, Dr. Christine Monroe, DVM of Spay Neuter Northwest, recently celebrated performing more than 10,000 spay and neuter surgeries, underscoring the scale of the challenge and the life-changing impact of accessible sterilization programs.
Demand is escalating rapidly, straining funding and heightening the need for community support.
