As summer begins, Marine Toys for Tots is emphasizing the importance of outdoor play for underserved children through its Give and Go: Outdoor Adventures Start with You initiative. In celebration of National Fishing Week (June 6-14), the organization partnered with local coordinator Gina Capate to host a fishing event in Maple Shade, New Jersey, providing 24 foster children with an opportunity to connect with nature and build lasting memories.
The event, affectionately called "Cops and Boppers," brought together volunteers, local leaders, and law enforcement officers who personally mentored the children. Participants learned patience, teamwork, and resilience while fishing, and each child received a fishing pole and tackle bag to take home. More importantly, they experienced a sense of belonging and community support. "This fishing event was about more than spending time on the water—it was about creating moments where children feel supported, encouraged, and included," said Lieutenant General Jim Laster, USMC (Retired), President and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. "Sometimes all it takes is one opportunity to spark confidence that can last a lifetime."
The Give and Go initiative aims to provide underserved children with access to outdoor experiences, educational toys, and books that foster confidence and curiosity. According to Lieutenant General Laster, outdoor play helps children discover their potential, and donations are used to provide fishing poles, soccer balls, books, and games that encourage creativity and problem-solving. "Outdoor experiences help children discover confidence, patience, and a sense of possibility that stays with them long after the day ends. Every child deserves the chance to step outside, try something new, and realize what they are capable of," he added.
For millions of underserved children, access to such opportunities is limited, making initiatives like this crucial. The event in New Jersey exemplifies how community generosity can transform simple activities into powerful experiences that build trust and self-esteem.
