Mónica Vázquez, General Manager of ABANCA USA, graces the cover of the latest edition of Negocios Magazine, underscoring her influence as a leading executive in South Florida's international banking sector. Her leadership has been pivotal in the U.S. expansion of ABANCA, a prominent financial group from Spain and Portugal, and in fostering stronger financial ties between Europe, Latin America, and the United States.
Based in Miami, ABANCA USA represents the American arm of one of the most significant banking institutions in the Iberian Peninsula. What started seven years ago as an ambitious international venture has blossomed into a thriving financial entity specializing in corporate, commercial, and private banking, serving clients with cross-border financial needs. Vázquez's journey began with the monumental task of establishing ABANCA USA from the ground up, which involved navigating regulatory approvals, assembling a local team, and creating a distinctive banking platform in one of the world's most competitive and heavily regulated financial markets. Today, ABANCA USA operates nationwide, with strategic growth into key markets such as New York and Texas.
In her interview with Negocios Magazine, Vázquez articulated the bank's strategy: to support internationally active clients through a single financial institution capable of serving them across multiple markets. "Today's client is global. There are no longer exclusively local clients. They are looking for a bank that can operate internationally, and that is exactly what we have built, always with a high level of specialization and personalized service," she explained. Vázquez also underscored ABANCA USA's active involvement in financing real estate ventures, including residential, hotel, office, and retail projects, as well as import/export operations, thereby contributing to Miami's emergence as a premier international financial hub. She emphasized the bank's commitment to digital transformation and innovation, revealing that artificial intelligence already supports approximately 25% of its internal processes, enhancing efficiency and personalization for clients.
The interview also delved into the growing influence of women in international banking. Vázquez shared her personal leadership journey and reflected on the increasing number of women in senior executive roles within the financial industry. She spoke about her dedication to the business community as President of the Spain–U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Miami and as an active board member of several leading financial and business organizations. Her insights and leadership continue to shape the future of banking, bridging gaps and fostering growth in a globalized economy.
