Neil Kelly has released its 2026 Home Design Trends Forecast, revealing how homeowners are increasingly prioritizing living spaces that feel grounding, warm, and reflect the natural world. The forecast identifies nine key trends that signal a shift away from artificial materials and cold aesthetics toward authenticity, craftsmanship, and emotional well-being.
Trend #1, 'Return to Earth,' underscores a growing desire for natural materials like stone, wood, and organic textures in refined architectural applications. Mary Miksch, Design Director for Neil Kelly, notes, 'We are seeing a movement away from man-made, fabricated materials and a return to natural, organic materials especially in wood flooring and paneling.' This trend reflects a broader societal push to reconnect with nature as technology and AI accelerate.
Trend #2 focuses on statement wallpaper and pattern play, with wallpaper becoming an architectural detail. Selah Ewert, General Manager of Neil Kelly Bend, explains, 'Botanical prints, moody landscapes, textured papers, and mural-style art add personality and depth to any room.' Pattern play extends to checkerboard floors, graphic tile layouts, and ceilings treated as the 'fifth wall.'
Trend #3 signals a departure from gray and white palettes toward warm browns, jewel tones, and blues. Matt White, general manager for Neil Kelly Eugene/Springfield, observes, 'There is a shift from the big splashes of white in kitchen cabinets and tile, as homeowners lean into the darker and warmer hues.' Expect deep purples, cabernet reds, dark greens, and teal-blue peacock hues.
Trend #4, 'Crafted with Intention,' emphasizes handcrafted custom pieces that bring meaning and artistry into everyday spaces. Amanda Armstrong Sava, general manager Neil Kelly Seattle, notes, 'Whether handrails, millwork, cabinetry or custom tilework, hand-crafted pieces offer storytelling opportunities and real-life connections.' This trend counters the impersonality of digital and AI-driven environments.
Trend #5 introduces new metallics like champagne bronze, brushed brass, and warm nickel, with mixed-metal moments gaining popularity. Chrome is making a comeback as an accent paired with darker tones. Trend #6, 'Vintage Meets Modern,' honors historical periods like Victorian and Craftsman while reinterpreting classic motifs for modern living.
Trend #7, 'Mood-Boosting Design,' prioritizes emotional quality, using color psychology and sensory elements like scent, sound, and tactile materials to create restorative sanctuaries. Trend #8 predicts soft, flowing curves replacing straight lines in architecture and furniture, adding movement and warmth.
Trend #9, 'Designing for Health & Wellness,' sees increased requests for sauna rooms, steam showers, and home gyms. Matt White predicts, 'With infrared saunas and cold plunges trending, clients are prioritizing spaces that support daily self-care and long-term wellness in the comfort of their home.'
