The American Heart Association announced today that Bradley A. Maron, M.D., FAHA, has been appointed as the new editor-in-chief of Circulation, the Association’s flagship peer-reviewed journal and a leading publication in cardiovascular medicine. Maron, a renowned expert in pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure, succeeds Joseph A. Hill, M.D., FAHA, who led the journal since 2016, and Joseph Loscalzo, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, who served from 2004 to 2016. The appointment takes effect with the current issue.
Maron brings a wealth of experience in basic, translational, clinical, and population health research. He is board-certified in clinical cardiology and currently serves as senior associate dean for precision medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and co-executive director of the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing. His career has focused on pulmonary vascular disease, particularly how conditions affecting lung blood vessels impact the heart.
In his new role, Maron aims to reinvigorate the journal’s content and delivery. Key new features include a Clinician Lighthouse article offering expert-guided interpretation of diagnostic tests and patient management, a Clinician’s Corner for practical decision-making, and a Patient’s Corner for public audiences. The journal will also introduce graphic abstracts for research articles, video commentaries for select manuscripts, and an accelerated, more transparent review process. Weekly electronic table of contents alerts with brief summaries will also be launched.
Maron will be supported by a new editorial team, including Executive Editor Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, from Washington University School of Medicine, and Deputy Executive Editor Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA, from Northwestern University. Ten deputy editors will oversee specific sections, such as Fundamental Sciences, Clinical Trials, and AI for Process and Science, reflecting the journal’s commitment to cutting-edge topics.

Maron’s scientific impact includes over 260 publications and six patents. He has served as principal investigator for federally funded research for over two decades, discovering novel mechanisms of vascular fibrosis and advancing the use of network medicine and AI in clinical diagnosis. His editorial experience includes roles with multiple high-impact journals, including Circulation, The Lancet, and The New England Journal of Medicine.
