Outamation and Extern Externships Equip 4,046 Students with Applied AI Skills for Mortgage Industry

More than 4,000 students have completed hands-on artificial intelligence training through two externship programs developed by Outamation, a mortgage operations technology company, and Extern, a platform that connects students with real-world work experience. The programs, announced on October 13, 2026, demonstrate a scalable model for closing the gap between AI education and workforce readiness, a critical need as employers across industries seek AI-competent talent.

The initiative matters because it moves beyond theoretical AI instruction to practical application on genuine business problems. Students worked with sample mortgage documents to train AI models to recognize document types and extract key information using Python code. They built AI systems that answer questions about documents and tested open-source AI models, skills that are directly transferable to finance, real estate, and other sectors. The programs offered two levels: a seven-week foundational externship covering AI, natural language processing, and computer vision, and a five-week advanced program where students fine-tuned their own models and built multi-step AI agents to automate document workflows.

For employers, the collaboration provides a dual benefit: access to a pipeline of AI-ready candidates and independent evaluations of open-source AI models that Outamation’s own team is considering. Advanced participants compared models on accuracy, cost, and ease of use, then presented their recommendations to Outamation stakeholders, simulating the accountability of a professional technology team. This approach not only equips students with in-demand skills but also gives the company actionable insights for its own AI development.

The scale of participation—4,046 students from 934 schools and 59 countries—highlights the program’s open-access design, which removes geographic and socioeconomic barriers to gaining real-world experience. “Every student today will build a career alongside AI. The question is whether they learn it by doing real work or by watching from the sidelines,” said Lisa Guadagno, Chief People Officer of Outamation. “More than 4,000 students chose to do the work. Our job as employers is to give the next generation the tools and the opportunity to succeed.”

Sapan Bafna, Founder & CEO of Outamation, emphasized the importance of industry context: “AI skills on their own are not enough. Students learn the most when they solve real business problems with people who know the industry and people who know the technology.” The curriculum was designed by Outamation’s mortgage domain experts and AI engineers, with Nirmal Patel, Chief AI Officer, leading program design and Devang Kamdar, Co-Founder and CTO, providing leadership. Mike Eng, Head of Partnerships at Extern, led the effort for Extern.

Matt Wilkerson, CEO at Extern, noted that most companies avoid such programs due to the burden of building and staffing them. “Taking that burden on is what Extern is for. Outamation handed students a real problem and got independent evaluations of the open-source AI models their own team is weighing in return. Having to make a recommendation and defend it to the people who will act on it is the part no course can simulate.”

Building on these results, Outamation and Extern plan to launch a new program designed to evolve with AI advances, ensuring students continue to learn the skills employers will need next. Students interested in future opportunities can learn more at www.extern.com.
