Parker Publishers has announced the upcoming release of Between Sirens and Silence: Life After Policing, a memoir by Jason Palmi, a retired Sacramento Police Department officer and current Criminal Justice educator. Scheduled for publication on November 4, 2026, the book chronicles Palmi's 31-year career in law enforcement and the challenging transition to life after the badge.
The memoir draws on Palmi's extensive experience across patrol, the academy, and the Emergency Vehicle Operations Center. It details the day-to-day realities of police work and the cumulative toll it can take over a career. The title refers to the silence that follows not only retirement but also the end of each shift, when officers return home and attempt to set aside the day's events. Palmi writes for officers who have lost their sense of purpose, for those considering entering the profession, and for the families who bear much of the emotional weight of the job.
Palmi's narrative follows a trajectory familiar to many in the profession: an initial calling, a prolonged period of burnout and disengagement, and ultimately a return to purpose. He credits his support system and faith as crucial elements in navigating the difficult years. After retiring from the Sacramento Police Department in 2017, Palmi moved to Montgomery, Texas, where he completed a master's degree at Sam Houston State University. He then began teaching Criminal Justice, first at Sacramento City College and later at Sam Houston State, where he continues to educate the next generation of law enforcement professionals.
In his own words, Palmi explains, "I wrote this book with the hope of helping those who wake up dreading a job they once loved and feeling trapped, believing they have no alternative but to be miserable. Drawing from my personal experiences with burnout, self-doubt, and career dissatisfaction, I share an honest story of transformation, showing how self-reflection, personal growth, and a willingness to embrace new opportunities can lead to renewed purpose and fulfilment, both on the job and in retirement." He emphasizes that the book provides a realistic perspective on the rewards and challenges of a law enforcement career, encouraging readers to challenge their self-imposed limitations and recognize that success is shaped by mindset, choices, and the courage to change.
The book will be available in eBook, paperback, and hardback formats through Amazon and Ingram Spark. Its release comes at a time when police morale and retention are pressing concerns nationwide, making Palmi's insights particularly timely. By addressing the often-unspoken struggles of officers, Between Sirens and Silence aims to foster understanding and offer a pathway to renewed purpose for those who serve and those who support them.
