Quantum BioPharma Ltd. (NASDAQ: QNTM) (CSE: QNTM) is moving its lead drug candidate, Lucid-MS, into a Phase 2 clinical trial for multiple sclerosis, a critical step that could validate a novel approach to treating the disease. In a recent appearance on The BioMedWire Podcast, Co-Founder and Executive Co-Chair Anthony Durkacz detailed the significance of the trial, noting that it will be the first time Lucid-MS is tested in patients with multiple sclerosis. The drug targets myelin, the protective sheath around nerve fibers that is damaged in MS, and has previously shown the ability to prevent and reverse myelin degradation in preclinical models.
The advancement to Phase 2 is important because it represents a transition from laboratory research to human testing in the actual patient population. If successful, Lucid-MS could offer a new mechanism of action for a disease that affects millions worldwide and for which current treatments primarily manage symptoms rather than repair damage. Quantum BioPharma, through its wholly owned subsidiary Lucid Psycheceuticals Inc., holds a patented new chemical entity, giving it exclusive rights to develop and commercialize the compound. Positive results could attract partnership interest from larger pharmaceutical companies and open up a multi-billion-dollar market.
Beyond its MS program, Quantum BioPharma is also focused on alcohol misuse disorders through its invention of unbuzzd(TM), a product designed to accelerate alcohol metabolism. Durkacz highlighted clinical results for unbuzzd(TM) and the commercial opportunity surrounding it. Quantum spun out the over-the-counter version to Unbuzzd Wellness Inc. (formerly Celly Nutrition Corp.), a company led by industry veterans, while retaining a 19.84% ownership stake as of March 31, 2026. More importantly, the agreement includes royalty payments of 7% of sales until payments to Quantum total $250 million, after which the royalty drops to 3% in perpetuity. This structure provides Quantum with a long-term revenue stream from a consumer product that addresses a widespread health concern.
The dual focus on a high-risk, high-reward drug candidate and a near-term consumer product demonstrates a strategy to balance innovation with cash flow. For investors, the Phase 2 trial for Lucid-MS represents a potential catalyst, while the unbuzzd(TM) royalty offers a more immediate financial upside. Quantum retains 100% of the rights to develop similar products or alternative formulations specifically for pharmaceutical and medical uses, preserving future opportunities in the medical alcohol misuse space.
