Quantum BioPharma Ltd. (NASDAQ: QNTM) (CSE: QNTM) announced that patient enrollment in its collaborative multiple sclerosis imaging study with Massachusetts General Hospital has reached the halfway mark. Preliminary imaging data show encouraging signal in acute MS lesions and potential sensitivity to gray matter lesions, according to the company's press release. The study is evaluating a novel PET imaging technique using the [¹⁸F]3F4AP tracer to directly assess demyelination, which Quantum believes could enhance development of MS therapies, including its investigational candidate Lucid-MS.
The company submitted an Investigational New Drug (IND) application for a Phase 2 trial of Lucid-MS to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in March 2026. Lucid-MS is a patented new chemical entity shown to prevent and reverse myelin degradation, the underlying mechanism of multiple sclerosis, in preclinical models. The ability to directly visualize demyelination through PET imaging could provide a critical biomarker for monitoring treatment efficacy and accelerate the development of remyelinating therapies.
Multiple sclerosis affects approximately 2.8 million people worldwide, and current diagnostic methods rely on MRI, which has limitations in detecting gray matter lesions and differentiating demyelination from other pathologies. If validated, the [¹⁸F]3F4AP tracer could offer a more specific tool for assessing disease activity and response to treatment. Quantum BioPharma is dedicated to building a portfolio of innovative assets for neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders, as well as alcohol misuse disorders. Through its wholly owned subsidiary Lucid Psycheceuticals Inc., the company is focused on Lucid-MS. Additionally, Quantum invented UNBUZZD and spun out its OTC version to Unbuzzd Wellness Inc., retaining a 19.84% ownership stake (as of March 31, 2026) and royalty payments. The agreement with Unbuzzd includes royalty payments of 7% of sales until payments total $250 million, after which the royalty drops to 3% in perpetuity. Quantum retains 100% of the rights to develop similar products for pharmaceutical and medical uses. The milestone in the imaging study represents a significant step toward potentially improving clinical trial design and patient monitoring in MS. If successful, the PET tracer could become a valuable tool for researchers and clinicians, ultimately benefiting patients by enabling more precise evaluation of therapies like Lucid-MS. The study's completion and subsequent data analysis will be closely watched by the medical community.
