SCHOTT Pharma, a provider of drug containment solutions and delivery systems, has reaffirmed its commitment to science-based climate action after the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validated the updated climate targets of its parent group, SCHOTT Group. The new framework maintains the existing Scope 1 and Scope 2 reduction goals while introducing an absolute Scope 3 emissions target, emphasizing measurable reductions across the value chain.
According to Reinhard Mayer, CFO of SCHOTT Pharma, the updated Scope 3 target allows the company to prioritize actions more effectively, focusing on the most impactful emission reductions. The company will continue to source Energy Attribute Certificates from renewable energies, improve energy efficiency, and collaborate with suppliers and customers to lower emissions throughout the value chain.
The validated targets require the SCHOTT Group to reduce absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions by 46.2% by fiscal year 2030 compared to a 2019 baseline, and to cut Scope 3 emissions by 27.5% in categories such as purchased goods and services, fuel- and energy-related activities, and processing of sold products. These targets align with the Paris Agreement and support limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
With the new validation, SCHOTT Group and SCHOTT Pharma have discontinued their previous internal goal of “climate neutral by 2030,” which had focused solely on Scope 1 and 2 and included compensation. The new approach prioritizes direct emission reductions over offsetting.
Decarbonization remains central to SCHOTT Pharma's strategy. Since 2021, the company has sourced Energy Attribute Certificates for its global manufacturing network. It also invests in technological innovations, such as a membrane-based system for Water for Injection (WFI) production at its Swiss site, which reduces fuel demand and improves water efficiency from 70% to over 90%.
Because pharmaceutical glass tubing production represents a significant share of the carbon footprint for glass containment solutions, innovations in low-emission melting technologies within the SCHOTT Group are crucial for reducing Scope 3.1 emissions. SCHOTT Pharma also evaluates suppliers' climate targets and renewable electricity sourcing, and participates in initiatives like Energize and Alliance to Zero to support decarbonization across the healthcare value chain.
