Hurricane Isaias struck the Florida Panhandle in early October 2026, displacing thousands of families and leaving more than 900,000 people without power. In the days and weeks that followed, access to hot meals became a critical need for survivors. Churches of Scientology Disaster Response (CSDR) Volunteer Ministers were called upon by their National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD) partner, Operation BBQ Relief, to assist in meeting that need.
CSDR deployed Volunteer Minister teams from the Tampa Bay area to Okaloosa County in northwest Florida. There, they worked alongside Operation BBQ Relief volunteers behind the scenes at the relief organization’s base, helping to cook hot meals, prepare food boxes, unload and load trucks, label boxes, and assist with food distribution. Their efforts contributed to the delivery of more than 270,000 hot meals to the hardest-hit areas until power could be restored.
Doyle Mills, the lead CSDR Volunteer Minister, remarked on the often-overlooked aspects of disaster response. “We often forget or don’t know about all that goes on behind the scenes in bringing relief to those impacted by disasters,” he said. “In this case, Operation BBQ Relief needed support at their base in not only cooking the hot meals, but preparing all the food boxes, unloading and loading trucks, labeling boxes and helping with the food distribution.” Despite the hard work, Mills described the experience as “a real joy.”
The partnership between the “yellow shirts” of the Volunteer Ministers and the “red shirts” of Operation BBQ Relief exemplifies the foundational guiding principles of NVOAD’s 4Cs: Communication, Coordination, Collaboration, and Cooperation. This collaboration is vital in disaster response, where no single organization can address all needs alone. By working together, the groups ensured that hot meals reached families, first responders, and relief workers efficiently.
Operation BBQ Relief is a nonprofit disaster-relief organization that deploys volunteer pit masters and mobile kitchens to provide hot barbecue meals in the wake of natural disasters. Churches of Scientology Disaster Response, formed after 9/11 and based in Washington, DC, has responded to hundreds of disasters, including tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and wildfires. The Volunteer Ministers program, a religious social service sponsored by the Church of Scientology International, was created in the mid-1970s by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard and operates in over 170 countries with the motto “Something Can Be Done About It.”
The implications of this collaboration extend beyond the immediate relief effort. It demonstrates how faith-based organizations and secular nonprofits can combine resources to enhance disaster response capacity. As extreme weather events become more frequent, such partnerships are essential for building resilient communities and ensuring that survivors receive timely assistance. The success of this operation underscores the importance of NVOAD’s coordination model and serves as a model for future disaster relief initiatives.
