SoulfulDate Survey Reveals How Users Balance Efficiency and Personalization in First Messages

SoulfulDate, an online social communication platform, has released findings from a voluntary survey of approximately 2,300 members on their use of Icebreakers, a feature that provides pre-written conversation starters. The survey, conducted from April to June 2026, reveals that 52% of respondents send the template without modification, 41% customize it before sending, and 7% vary their approach depending on the recipient's profile. These results offer insight into a defining tension of digital communication: the trade-off between efficiency and self-expression.

Among those who use the default template, the primary reasons include the template being sufficient (36%), saving time (33%), matching what they would have written (12%), and uncertainty about what to write (19%). The latter aligns with [research published in Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking](https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1089/cyber.2023.0604) indicating that individuals with higher social anxiety are less likely to initiate contact online, even when tools are available. The data also shows that users who send to the maximum of five recipients are 16 percentage points more likely to use the default template (68% vs. 52%), suggesting that broader reach correlates with a preference for efficiency.

Conversely, those who customize their icebreakers do so to make the message more personal (54%), reference something specific from the profile (23%), feel more comfortable with self-written messages (15%), or because they are dissatisfied with the default tone (8%). Overall, 76% of respondents describe the post-send experience as confident or neutral, indicating that Icebreakers serve as a low-friction entry point for initiating conversations.

A SoulfulDate product team representative commented, "The split we see in how SoulfulDate members use Icebreakers reflects something broader about how people approach a first message. Some members value the speed and simplicity of a ready-made prompt. Others want to say something that feels specific to the person they are reaching out to. Understanding the difference between those two groups and what each of them needs shapes how we think about the feature going forward."

The survey collected no personally identifiable information, with responses stored independently of user accounts and an anonymity notice shown before participation. Only aggregated results were retained. All respondents were registered, active members who had used Icebreakers at least once, and no demographic data beyond age eligibility (18+) and prior feature use was collected. Participation was opt-in, so the results reflect engaged users and may not represent the broader membership.

These findings are relevant beyond SoulfulDate, as they shed light on how users navigate the balance between convenience and authenticity in digital interactions. As platforms increasingly offer automated tools, understanding user preferences for personalization versus efficiency can inform design decisions that cater to diverse communication styles.
