Stonegate Capital Partners has updated its coverage on Burcon Nutrascience Corporation (TSX: BU), highlighting the company's transition from technology validation to commercial execution. Burcon's first-quarter fiscal 2027 results, reported on August 13, 2026, show significant progress in revenue growth and customer adoption, but also underscore the challenges ahead in meeting its ambitious sales targets and achieving profitability.
In the first quarter, Burcon reported revenue of $1.28 million, a 54% increase sequentially and a 273% increase year-over-year. The number of active buying customers rose to 40, up from over 30 in the previous quarter, and repeat purchasing continues to build, providing better visibility into recurring demand. This traction indicates that the company's plant-based protein products are gaining acceptance in the market.
However, the quarter was not without its setbacks. A $1.76 million inventory write-down masked a much narrower underlying gross loss, suggesting that operational efficiencies are improving. The company is also focusing on expanding its production capacity at its Galesburg facility and securing additional funding to support the ramp-up.
According to Stonegate, the key execution levers now are capacity and funding. Burcon has planned an up-to-$8.1 million financing to bridge liquidity and support the production expansion. This funding is critical to meet the growing demand and to scale operations.
Despite the positive momentum, the second-half ramp remains substantial. To achieve the prior CY26 sales objective of $10 million, Burcon would need to generate approximately $7.9 million in sales during the second half of the fiscal year. This would require a significant acceleration in order flow and production capacity. Positive cash flow remains an important milestone, and the company's ability to reach it will depend on executing its growth plans effectively.
Stonegate's update provides a balanced view, acknowledging the progress Burcon has made while highlighting the risks ahead. The company's ability to convert its growing customer interest into sustained revenue growth will be closely watched by investors.
