Taiwan Entrepreneur Brings Smart Elderly Care to Mainland China as Silver Economy Grows

Time Light Care, a smart elderly care enterprise based in Tianjin, north China, has developed a proprietary smart elderly care management platform that draws on Taiwan's long-term care experience. The company is capitalizing on the mainland's growing silver economy, as China's elderly population aged 60 and above reached 320 million by the end of 2025, a figure projected to exceed 400 million by 2035, with the silver economy expected to surpass 30 trillion yuan (about 4.41 trillion U.S. dollars).

The nursing homes operated by Time Light Care are positioned as "community-embedded, small-to-medium scale, high-quality care" facilities, allowing the elderly to stay in familiar surroundings while remaining close to family members. On the technology front, the company has introduced millimeter-wave radar monitors for completely bedridden residents to track breathing, pulse, and heartbeat in real time, with automatic alerts sent to caregivers' phones in case of any abnormality.

The company has also introduced accessible vehicles equipped with detachable automatic wheelchairs that go directly to the bedside, helping "suspended seniors"—those who struggle to go downstairs due to the lack of elevators—to go out with dignity. These innovations come amid policy support from the Chinese government. In February 2026, an executive meeting of the State Council proposed to promote the expansion and quality improvement of inclusive elderly care service supply, improving a tiered, categorized, inclusive, accessible, urban-rural covering, and sustainable elderly care service system.

"The mainland's policy support and market scale have created immense opportunities for innovation in senior care," said Jing Ran, the company's representative, during an exclusive interview with China News Service. "Having succeeded in starting our business here, we now hope to encourage more young people from Taiwan to come, explore, and develop their careers on the mainland."

The implications of this announcement are significant. Time Light Care's entry into the mainland market highlights the growing integration of cross-strait expertise in elderly care, leveraging Taiwan's experience in long-term care while tapping into the mainland's vast market. The company's focus on technology-driven solutions, such as millimeter-wave radar monitors and accessible vehicles, addresses critical challenges in elderly care, including real-time health monitoring and mobility for seniors in buildings without elevators. As China's elderly population continues to grow, innovations like these are essential for improving quality of life and reducing the burden on caregivers.

Moreover, the policy direction set by the State Council in February 2026 underscores the government's commitment to expanding inclusive elderly care services. This creates a favorable environment for companies like Time Light Care to scale their operations and introduce new technologies. The company's success could serve as a model for other cross-strait collaborations in the silver economy, potentially attracting more Taiwanese entrepreneurs and young professionals to the mainland.

The broader impact of this development extends to the silver economy's projected growth, which is expected to surpass 30 trillion yuan by 2035. Innovations in smart elderly care not only address immediate needs but also contribute to economic growth by creating new markets and job opportunities. As Time Light Care expands its footprint, it may inspire further investment in elderly care technology, ultimately benefiting millions of elderly individuals and their families across China.
