The Italian Barrel Earns 2026 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence

The Italian Barrel, an intimate Northern Italian restaurant located at 1240 Decatur Street in New Orleans' French Quarter, has been awarded the 2026 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. This honor, part of Wine Spectator's annual Restaurant Awards, recognizes restaurants with wine lists that offer at least 75 selections, featuring a well-chosen assortment of quality producers that thematically match the menu in both price and style.

Wine Spectator's Restaurant Awards, launched in 1981, celebrate excellence in restaurant wine service across three levels: the Award of Excellence, the Best of Award of Excellence, and the Grand Award. This year, 2,083 restaurants earned the Award of Excellence, including The Italian Barrel, while 1,830 received the Best of Award of Excellence and 99 achieved the Grand Award.

"Wine is part of the natural rhythm of a meal at The Italian Barrel—not an afterthought, but something to explore slowly, share generously and enjoy course by course," said Lori and Kevin Cates, co-owners of The Italian Barrel. "This recognition belongs to our entire team, whose knowledge, care and hospitality make every bottle and every table feel personal." The restaurant, founded by Verona-born Chef Samantha Castagnetti and now stewarded by the Cates, honors Northern Italian traditions through seasonal pastas, composed secondi, and a deeply Italian wine program.

Wine Spectator Chairman and CEO Marvin R. Shanken noted the evolving restaurant industry, stating, "The restaurant industry is rapidly transforming as diners become more selective about when, how and what they drink. As wine drinkers grow more mindful, restaurants are adapting with creative wine programs." He congratulated the 4,012 restaurants that earned awards this year.

The Award of Excellence is a significant achievement for The Italian Barrel, which aims to make wine an integral part of the dining experience rather than an afterthought. The recognition underscores the restaurant's dedication to curating a wine list that complements its menu, which emphasizes carefully sourced ingredients and traditional Northern Italian cuisine.

Wine Spectator's special Restaurant Awards issue will be available on newsstands July 21, 2026. For more information on winners, including interviews with leading wine directors and pairing tips, visit WineSpectator.com/Restaurants. Winners can also be searched by name, location, award level, cuisine, wine specialties, and pricing in the Restaurant Search feature.

The Italian Barrel, described as an intimate, candlelit restaurant steps from Frenchmen Street and across from the New Orleans Jazz Museum, offers indoor and heated outdoor seating. Guests are invited to slow down and share courses, with reservations available via italianbarrelfq.com or OpenTable.
