Three Generations of Family Grit: How Mitch Gould Built NPI from a Brooklyn Factory to Walmart

Mitch Gould, founder and CEO of Nutritional Products International (NPI), traces his success back to his grandfather's Brooklyn factory and Empire State Building showroom, and his father Jerry Gould's expansion into manufacturing and distribution. This three-generation legacy of entrepreneurship laid the foundation for Gould's creation of the proprietary "Evolution of Distribution®" platform, a turnkey system that integrates FDA compliance, global logistics, retail introductions, sales, and marketing to help health and wellness brands enter the American marketplace efficiently.

Growing up in Brooklyn, Gould absorbed lessons in retail and perseverance from his family. His grandfather operated a factory in Brooklyn and maintained a showroom in the Empire State Building during an era when business relied on personal relationships and handshake deals. His father, Jerry, built on that foundation by expanding into manufacturing and distribution, deepening the family's ties to the retail trade. Gould recalls, "I grew up seeing what it meant to build something real."

Entering the retail industry in 1986, Gould's career was shaped significantly by a mentor named R.D. Wells, who introduced him to Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank during the early expansion of Home Depot. This connection gave Gould a front-row seat to the transformation of big-box retail. He later represented major brands such as Igloo, Rubbermaid, Sunbeam, and Miracle-Gro, as well as celebrity lines including Steven Seagal's Lightning Bolt Energy Drink and Hulk Hogan's Hogan Nutrition, securing placements at retailers like Walmart, Costco, GNC, CVS, Walgreens, Amazon, and Home Depot.

One of Gould's key early achievements was partnering with Amazon when it was still primarily an online bookstore. He recognized the potential for selling nutritional supplements and health products on the platform and worked directly with Amazon's buyers to build the sports nutrition and health products category from scratch, ultimately growing it to over $100 million in sales. This experience inspired the creation of the Evolution of Distribution platform in 2007.

Today, NPI's platform compresses what once took global brands 18 to 24 months into a streamlined market entry, reflecting the efficiency and resourcefulness that have defined the Gould family across three generations. Gould's memoir, The Blonde, the Ferrari, and the Kwan: The Quintessential American Success Story, details his journey from his grandfather's Brooklyn factory to the executive suites of America's largest retailers.
