The back-to-school season is a time of excitement and promise for millions of American children, but for many, it also highlights a stark disparity: a lack of access to books and educational resources that are fundamental to academic success. The Marine Toys for Tots Literacy Program is confronting this challenge head-on with Operation Turn the Page, a nationwide initiative grounded in the belief that a single book can unlock a child's future.
Since 2008, the Toys for Tots Literacy Program has distributed more than 63 million books and educational resources to underserved children, aiming to bolster literacy, foster a love of reading, and keep young minds engaged. The need remains urgent, as low-income communities can have as few as one age-appropriate book for every 300 children. This scarcity hampers literacy development and exacerbates summer learning loss, making the return to school even more difficult.
Operation Turn the Page is designed to bridge this gap by providing books to children during the summer months, ensuring they come back to the classroom with confidence and readiness. Lieutenant General Jim Laster, U.S. Marines (Retired), President and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, emphasizes the transformative power of a simple gift: “A single book may seem like a small gift, but for a child impacted by summer learning loss, it can open the door to possibilities they never knew existed. When children living in low-income communities have access to books throughout the summer, they return to school more confident, engaged, and prepared to learn. When you give a book, you unlock a future.”
The initiative's impact is visible in classrooms across the country. After a distribution event, a teacher at Freedom Trail Elementary noted, “For many of our students, receiving these books means more than just reading—it's the beginning of their first home library and a lifelong love of learning.” At United Elementary, students received more than 400 books, sparking excitement that resonated beyond school walls. Staff observed, “With over 400 new books in the hands of our students, we're seeing excitement, pride, and a growing love of reading both in school and at home.” Similarly, at Entheos Academy, a teacher recounted a moment of wonder: “One student's face lit up with pure wonder when she found a book about baseball—proof that the right book can spark a lifelong love of reading.”
