Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (TSX.V: VM) (OTC Pink: VYYRF) has announced significant progress in its proprietary Mueller iodine extraction process, achieving 99.8% purity and over 90% recovery in laboratory tests using real oilfield brine. The company is now preparing for field pilot testing, a critical step toward commercial deployment and establishing a domestic iodine supply for North America's radiology contrast media market.
The Mueller process is designed to recover high-purity iodine from iodine-rich oilfield brine, offering oil and gas producers and midstream water operators a new way to generate value from produced water. Voyageur's Houston, Texas laboratory has validated the process under controlled conditions, producing clean brine suitable for disposal or reinjection, consistent with zero-liquid-discharge goals. The field-capable pilot unit, sized to treat up to 80,000 liters per day, is scheduled to begin testing in the coming weeks, with operations planned for September 2026.
Key laboratory achievements include continuous operation using unaltered oilfield brine, validation of scale-up parameters, and completion of a preliminary design basis for a 200 metric ton per year plant. The company has also completed techno-economic and environmental assessments supporting a low-cost operating expense and environmental profile.
Field testing is expected to provide real-world operating data to support the design of modular, relocatable production units. Voyageur's modular concept envisions multiple 200-tonne-per-year field units deployed at saltwater disposal sites, with iodine concentrate transported to a central hub for final polishing, prilling, and packaging. Engineering work is progressing to define the demonstration-scale configuration, refine cost estimates, and support future commercial deployment.
For oil and gas operators and produced water midstream companies, this development represents a shift in how produced brine is viewed: from a disposal liability to a valuable resource. Billions of barrels of brine are handled and disposed of annually at significant cost, yet only a small fraction of the iodine they contain is recovered. Voyageur aims to be the first to economically extract iodine at scale, contributing to the broader industry trend of brine valorization.
Strategically, Voyageur's vertically integrated approach seeks to improve supply-chain security for iodinated contrast media, reduce reliance on imported iodine, and lower operating costs. The Mueller process is a key component of this strategy, as iodine is a critical raw material for medical imaging agents.

The company's staged approach aims to validate iodine recovery in the field, advance modular production, and ultimately support iodine-based drug manufacturing. By developing the Mueller process alongside its Frances Creek barium project, Voyageur is positioning itself across key parts of the medical imaging contrast media value chain.
