Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (TSX.V: VM) (OTC Pink: VYYRF) has announced the achievement of the first milestone under its non-dilutive Collaboration and Funding Agreement with Bayer AG, securing a USD $1 million payment. The milestone was triggered by the submission of a complete feasibility work plan and timetable, which Bayer has approved. This payment, combined with the initial USD $350,000 received in March, brings the total received to USD $1.35 million of the USD $2.35 million committed by Bayer under the agreement.

The feasibility study is central to Voyageur's strategy to produce pharmaceutical-grade iodine from produced water in the Anadarko Basin using its proprietary Mueller extraction process. The company's Houston R&D team has successfully demonstrated the process in the laboratory, achieving 99.8% purity iodine, which provided the technical confirmation needed for Bayer to advance the program. A transportable pilot plant is nearing completion and is scheduled for field operations this fall. The remaining USD $1 million milestone payment is contingent on the successful completion of the feasibility study, which will be supported by engineering firm Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR).

Brent Willis, President and CEO of Voyageur, emphasized the importance of this progress: "Achievement of this first milestone under our agreement with Bayer is an important step forward for Voyageur. It confirms that the feasibility work is advancing as planned and triggers the first major non-dilutive payment under the collaboration. This capital is expected to further accelerate our iodine supply strategy and move us closer to validating a reliable North American source of high-purity iodine for use in contrast media drugs."

The proposed project aims for a staged production rollout, starting with 200 tonnes per year and potentially expanding to 1,000 tonnes per year. If successful, a central iodine manufacturing facility would process the iodine concentrate to produce USP-grade iodine for use in contrast drugs. This initiative is part of Voyageur's broader vertical integration strategy to reduce reliance on imported raw materials and lower operating costs in the medical imaging contrast market, which is estimated at approximately USD $7.06 billion.

Fluor has been providing engineering, thermodynamic modeling, and project planning support. The next phases, FEL-2 (Concept Design) and FEL-3 (Basic Design), are expected to take four to five months and seven to nine months, respectively. The funding from Bayer will support these activities as Voyageur progresses towards potentially establishing a domestic, high-purity iodine supply for Bayer's contrast drug manufacturing.

The achievement of this milestone is a significant step for Voyageur, which is developing barium and iodine Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and aims to become a vertically integrated player in the contrast media market. The company also owns the Frances Creek barium sulfate project, which it believes offers a high-grade mineral suitable for pharmaceutical use. Voyageur's strategy includes partnering with established manufacturers to generate cash flow in the near term and transitioning into a domestic manufacturer of radiology drugs in the long term.

This development underscores the growing importance of supply chain security in the pharmaceutical industry, particularly for critical components like iodine used in medical imaging. By securing non-dilutive funding and technical validation, Voyageur is positioning itself to play a key role in the North American market for contrast media ingredients.
