Why Many Founders Hit a Growth Wall and How a Leadership Shift Can Break It

Many founders discover that the skills that launched their business are not enough to scale it, according to Atlanta-based executive coach and strategic leadership expert Dr. Sam Adeyemi. He describes a common “brick wall” between the startup and expansion phases, where no matter what entrepreneurs do, growth stalls. The reason, he says, is that the hands-on approach that helped a young company survive can become a bottleneck as it grows.

In a young business, founders often handle everything themselves, Adeyemi notes. But as a company expands, decisions, operations, and problem-solving remain dependent on one person, limiting the organization’s capacity. Scaling instead requires entrepreneurs to build systems, develop talent, and empower teams rather than remain at the center of every activity. Simply working harder may not solve the problem, he says. Breaking through the brick wall requires shifting how leaders think, lead, and operate — evolving into a leader who creates scalable systems, eliminates activities that drain resources, and transforms their leadership identity to support 10x growth or more.

Adeyemi draws on principles from his book SHIFTS: 6 Steps to Transform Your Mindset and Elevate Your Leadership, published by Wiley. The book outlines six steps for transforming leadership: See, Hear, Insight, Formulate, Transform, and Succeed. This process model is designed to help leaders break free from limiting assumptions, discover new possibilities, turn fresh insights into meaningful action, and unlock the potential of those around them. The implications for business owners are significant: growth may depend less on personal effort and more on a deliberate shift in leadership identity and organizational design.

The message arrives as many small and mid-sized companies look for ways to scale without burning out their founders. Adeyemi’s framework suggests that the barrier to expansion is often internal rather than external. By changing how they see, hear, and act on information, leaders can move from operating as the center of every activity to building the systems and teams that support sustained growth.
